GWBG 2012 Remote Casting Call

It’s been a couple weeks since I began to push for people to send in remote cameos of themselves for “Girls Will Be Girls 2012,” and so far the response has been… well, nonexistent (even after Queerty did an item!)

I totally get it — the instructions make it seem kinda hard.  And maybe it is hard, but the instructions describe sort of the best-case scenario, and are written in the standoffish tone one strikes when offering a second chance to people who purchased a cameo role in one’s movie and then couldn’t make it to the set; we’ve all been there.  But now it’s more of a “please help us” kind of situation.  Maybe even a “please, pleeeeese help us — we’ve gone out on a limb with this whole ‘first-ever crowd-sourced movie’ stuff, and it will be super embarrassing if it ends up being a total bust” situation.

Besides, won’t it be fun if at two points in the film it suddenly cuts all over the world to scores of fans and fellow filmmakers and people who just need to see their fucking mug plastered everywhere?  Especially if a lot of them are in drag!  Which is super fun all by itself, see:

And if you’re a woman, female-to-male drag is a blast too, see:

Honestly at this point I would settle for the film cutting to San Francisco, Dallas and New York a bunch of times to a series of middle-aged white gay couples.

So, first of all here are the standoffy instructions.  Just mentally add a bunch of pleases and thank you’s everywhere, and maybe some bullshit about how fun it will be, and it should read great.

The pdf makes a big deal about the kind of camera and frame rate and lens you should use, but the truth is any HD camera at any frame rate with any lens will work just fine.  And if all you have is a webcam, use that and do a video of you watching a gross video on youtube like this, and we’ll have someone watching you watch it.

You have until the end of July.

And for your trouble, we will send you a signed poster!

Email us at girlswillbegirls2012@gmail.com with any questions.  And spread the word!

Please?  Thank you!  It will be so fun.

Also:

I think the conversion rate of people who hear about this to people who actually do it could be kind of small (so far Scott and Tim are the only ones who have gone the distance) so the more people who can get the word out the better the chances we can actually pull these sequences off.

Other gay blogs?  People on Twitter?  Spread the word and we will be wildly grateful, except Evie.

Thanks!

Film your own Girls Will Be Girls 2012 cameo!

I’ve gotten really excited about this — anyone who can should have a friend or two over (I’m thinking of your friend who does drag) and follow the easy instructions in the document at the other end of this link:

Okay, it’s not that easy, but it’s not impossible.  And if it is impossible, then just do one of those YouTube “someone watching gross video” videos with a webcam and in the movie we’ll have someone else watching that.  There’s still lots of time to do it too.

The more people from the more countries we can get into the film, the better.  We could be the first crowdsource funded and acted (and shot) movie ever(!)

And spread the word!

Thanks.

Just found out about this! I'm so excited! I live in Melbourne Australia, just wondering if it's too late to submit footage for the film? x Anonymous

It’s nowhere near too late, please help us out!  It’s great that you are in Australia, maybe something that shows that off?  And if you or anyone you know do drag, that would be even more fun.

Thanks, and spread the word.  It would be amazing to have people from all over the world in the new film.

GWBG 2012 becomes crowdsourced!

I don’t think we’re the first feature film to be entirely funded by the internet, though we are in the first handful.  But I bet we’re the first feature film ever to also be made, in part, by fans.

See, one of our Kickstarter premiums was a walk-on role in the film.  A lot of people chose this one, so when you see the movie, whenever a character has just one line it’s a fair bet the actor paid to be there.

Still, some people wanted to be in the movie but didn’t live in Los Angeles.  Many, believe it or not, didn’t even live in California and actually flew in just to be in our little movie.  But others couldn’t, or couldn’t with the kind of advance notice we were able to give (none.)  So for these people we devised the idea of the remote cameo.

Basically there are sections in the film where we want to show that people all over the world are seeing something on TV or online.  So I wrote up a little instruction sheet of (I thought) easy-to-follow directions on how people could shoot themselves with a home video camera in a way that would cut in well with the film.

It turns out I had gotten a little too used to how hard movie making is, because no one felt up to the task as outlined.  Or maybe they just didn’t think it was worth the effort.  In any case it looked like we were going to have to shoot that people-watching-TV stuff ourselves.

But then yesterday we got word that some intrepid Kickstarters in Houston had filmed themselves over the weekend!  Scott Arnold, Tom Snyder and Tim Frederick can now and for all time go down in tiny drag movie history as the first-ever remote cameo appearance by a financier of a movie, shot by Tom Snyder.  So a big thank-you to them for taking the time and trouble.

Come to think:  Maybe thank you too.  We need all sorts of these, and since they are so involved to make that effort is its own sort of donation.  So, if anyone wants to take the time to shoot their own cameo, here are the instructions:

We can’t guarantee we’ll be able to use yours but we sure will try.  Let’s all make “Girls Will Be Girls 2012” the world’s first truly self-service movie!

TMZ just caught some great pics of Toby Speed trolling the stool softener aisle at the Smart and Final on Venice. Was he as much of a perv in person as he seems? ohtheterror

SPOILER ALERT:  Toby Speed (director of “Asteroid 2012”) ruins everything he touches, though some of them beat him to it.
